On My Easel

This is where I will discuss my current art projects. Although I paint in a variety of mediums, I do almost always use an easel whether I am painting acrylics, oils, pastels, or other medium (unless the canvas is a miniature that I can hold in my hand).

Mini Cow Painting Done!

two cows mini painting by artist DJ GeriboToday I finished my Mini Cow Painting. The size, as I mentioned earlier, was 3"x5". Sometimes smaller sizes can be more work than larger sizes. I have painted both so I can attest to this. I have painted 30"x40" paintings and the first time I did so I thought I would be overwhelmed by the size when in fact, I was quite comfortable with it and thought I could paint even larger! But working in oils on this 3"x5" has been tedious. I can't seem to work on one area without messing up another area that is close by. I planned on doing another 3"x5" in oils but I'm rethinking that and will possibly paint it in acrylics instead.

But now I'm finished (mostly). I will add a little bit of grass pieces here and there and as I looked at it this morning, a few more touch ups (that hopefully will not mess up the rest of the painting!) but other than that, I'm done. I have a linen mat and frame ready to put this in - after I varnish, of course -  just in time for my July show.

Moose Painting on Suede Paper

I moose painting in progress by artist DJ Geribolove trying new art materials. Sometimes I will have them for awhile before I actually try them out for the first time. And that is the case with the new suede paper I bought for pastels. Although I did buy it at Christmas, which wasn't that long ago, still it has been sitting in my drawer and today I finally decided to cut a piece up into a few smaller pieces so that I could try it out.

I have a solo show coming up in July so I've been working on my inventory for that, painting a variety of different sized paintings for the show since I'm not sure how many I will be able to hang in the show yet. Since it is a small piece, I thought I should use the pastel pencils for the details.

I started drawing the moose on the surface and instead of drawing in with a graphite pencil, I used my pastel pencils. I got a new kneaded eraser and was thrilled when the places I needed to erase came right off, without any effort. Now, I love doing animal portraits on velour paper, and they look fabulous on this paper, but you really cannot make corrections on velour. I've had to start from scratch when I've made mistakes on a commissioned piece. I don't yet have a feel for how much pastel the paper will hold, but I think I can probably rub the color into the paper and it will hold onto it. I also need to do some research on the paper and find out whether or not it needs to have fixative (or if it can even tolerate fixative).

This is what I have so far....long way to go!

New Website Coming Soon!

My husband, my #1 fan who also happens to be an Internet Architect (can create every imaginable kind of website) is, as I write this, working on a new website for me. I guess like a lot of other things in life, it is time for a change. Change is good, and I'm looking forward to my new site. You will still be able to purchase my artwork from the site, but besides changing the look of it, I will be doing a lot more blogging, at least weekly. I am still blogging weekly for our other two online businesses (www.eyehelpanimals.com and www.helpshelterpets.com) but I am going to work on my time management so that I have time for all of it. Phew!

I am currently in the process of finishing up the format/layout work for, what will be, my first published book....with many more to come. Which also means, working on my Publishing website since I will be entering the world of self-publishing. I used to work for a publishing company many years ago and am still in touch with the man who was the President of the publishing company - who, by the way, has extended his help with starting my publishing company and giving my first book a final look over before it goes to the printer. He also knows a lot of people in the business since he also has his own publishing company.

Stay tuned! I hope you like my new look. You will also be able to easily comment on my artwork. Looking forward to building a network of fans!

Mini Cow Painting

mini cow painting in oils - unfinished - by artist DJ Geribo   I've been spending a lot of time preparing for a solo show I am having at the Libby Museum in Wolfeboro, NH. My theme is 'Animals' meaning mostly wild ones but I will probably also put in a couple domestic animal paintings, also.

One painting I am currently working on is a 3"x5" oil of two cows standing next to a pond. I've been painting with acrylics a lot lately and have forgotten how long you have to wait to continue working on an oil painting. Although I'm enjoying working on this piece (to be honest I enjoying working on any painting) it will probably end up taking me as much time as it would take to paint an 8"x10" or 11"x14". I'm getting impatient and if I don't wait, the black is smearing into the white and so I have to redo the white and then wait a few days. With that said, I don't think I'll have any other mini paintings in this show, unless I paint them in acrylics!

Joined Daily Paintworks

You can now find my artwork also on Daily Paintworks. Although there is just a sampling of my artwork there, I am excited to be venturing out beyond my own site and joining many others on a daily painting website. Also, this will get me back to painting on an almost daily basis. I will also be adding more content to my blog.  Check out my work and also the work of many other talented artists on Daily Paintworks!
