Springing Out

The seasons in New Hampshire often predict where we spend our time. Although I'm not a fan of the heat, I do look forward to getting out a little more and enjoying the birds and other wildlife that visit our mostly wooded property.

And since I'm not a fan of the heat, I'm not a fan of plein aire painting and I do not have a good reaction to a variety of bug bites, either. But we do have a gazebo set up on our deck where I can paint without interruption from the pesky bugs. I plan on spending more time out there this summer and enjoying our tent and hearing the variety of birds who spend their summers with us.

And since we are getting outside (but mostly staying safe in our own yard) I have visited my painting friend and most likely will visit her a few times during the summer months to paint outdoors. This is the time to enjoy the outside and along with the many photos I will take, I'm hoping to complete many paintings.

(The photo of the turkey moms with babies was taken in my back yard. They feel mostly safe with me so let me throw corn out while they stand off to the side and then come in to eat when I go inside.)

A few weeks ago Jim called me into the living room where he could see out of our sunroom window. There was a bird he wanted me to see that he had never seen before. It sat on the crook where our feeder hung for several minutes. I knew immediately that it was a Scarlet Tanager, the first I've ever seen here in NH. Its colors were screaming bright and beautiful! I had to do a painting and although I have the majority of it to my liking, I have a little more work to do to complete it. I am painting him in oils on an 8x10" canvas.

Featuring some of my favorite art work that I've painted over the years.
One of my favorite subjects to paint is fruit and veggie still lifes. I've set up many fruits and veggies that I think will make a nice painting, sometimes even buying fruits and veggies that are colorful for a still life that I can paint. I decided to work on a new series that I had started in February when I was painting weekly at my friend's house. I haven't spent as much time on it during the winter months in my studio but now I'm getting back to my studio, which has A/C installed, so I will be working on some of my unfinished work in the upcoming months. I'm also getting together, occasionally, with my friend again since we can paint outdoors.

My first painting in this series is the Siberian Tiger which I featured in my Jan/Feb 2020  newsletter. This painting in still in the unfinished stages but I plan on spending more time on all of my paintings in the upcoming months.
The Masters
 Leonardo Da Vinci

When we think of Leonardo Da Vinci, one word comes to mind: Genius.

He was born on April 15, 1452 in the town of Vinci in the Tuscan Hills to a woman, illigitimately, about whom almost nothing is known. His father was a notary, lived to 77, had 4 wives and sired 12 children. Leonardo's childhood afforded him much time roaming the countryside which gave him exposure to botany, geology, flight of birds and other elements of nature.

Fortunately his father recognized his talent and when Leonardo was 15, took him to Florence to apprentice in Andrea del Verrocchio's studio, one of the most sought after artists in Italy. Leonardo lived in his master's house even after he was admitted to the guild of St. Luke's when he was 20.

In 1482, at age 30, after feeling snubbed by the Medici, Leonardo went to Milan. It was here he found the recognition he had not found at home.

Surprising to note that during his lifetime Leonardo produced a little more than a dozen paintings. It is an important aspect of Leonardo that he considered landscape "not as a mere backdrop for studies of human figure but man as an inextricable part of nature." He did, however, accumulate some 7000 pages of notes and drawings.

'Renaissance Man' is the term most often used to describe Leonardo with a list of interests that far exceeds any of his contemporaries: anatomy, botany, cartography, geology, mathematics, aeronautics, optics, mechanics, astronomy, hydraulics, sonics, civil engineering, weaponry, and city planning.

In 1514, at the age of 62, without a home or a patron, Leonardo was about to wander into old age, nearly forgotten, when he was offered a haven in France by the young King, Francis I. It is here Leonardo lived his final days to 67, and passed away on May 2, 1519, as a ward of the King, who he had entertained while living there, talking about philosophy and art.
